On October 1, 2017, a gunman opened fire on a crowd of concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada. The shooting lasted for over 10 minutes, and resulted in the deaths of 58 people and the injuries of over 850 others. It was one of the most devastating mass shootings in modern American history.

The gunman, Stephen Paddock, was a 64-year-old retired accountant who lived in Mesquite, Nevada. He had no criminal record, and no known history of mental illness. He had purchased 42 firearms in the years leading up to the shooting, including several high-powered rifles.

The shooting was eventually stopped by police, who stormed Paddock’s room and found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive for the shooting is still unknown.
